Quarter of EU phones use only mobile

Mobile phones have become so popular that a quarter of European households use their handsets only, relegating their landline to a thing of the past.

A new survey by the European commission revealed that 24 per cent of households used only their mobile phone to call.

With dropping costs of mobile telephony and a range of new applications, people are becoming more dependent on their handsets.

They can also use their portable devices to make cheap international calls using skinttariffs.com access codes.

Some 27,000 homes throughout the 27 EU states were surveyed.

The former communist countries of Eastern Europe had high rates, with the relative cheapness of setting up mobile infrastructure leading to 39 per cent of homes using mobiles only.

However, Finland, where Nokia handset maker is based, registered the highest proportion of mobile-only households, 61 per cent.

Mobile data services are the future and we in Europe were the first to roll them out," EU Telecoms Commissioner Viviane Reding said.
